Reading Barcodes Within The Ex Zone

The new barcode reader from Pepperl+Fuchs: PowerScan
A new high-performance barcode reader is available that reads barcodes in hazardous areas. PowerScan has an improved design that includes a recessed display and protected scanner window that guarantees correct functioning of the device, even after a fall from a height of two meters. And it has patented technologies that enable it to read poorly printed or even damaged labels. It replaces the Dragon D101 handheld barcode reader.

PowerScan is a wired barcode reader that was designed to perform in demanding conditions. It complies with ignition protection class ib, has an IP65 degree of protection, and is approved for category II 2G/D [Zone 1 and 21 (in progress)]. Typical applications include the collection of process data and barcode scanning for logistics purposes.

Three green LEDs located on the top and back of the PowerScan are visible from any angle and confirm that the code has been read successfully. By using the aiming option, even barcodes positioned extremely close to each other can be read safely. With this feature, it is possible to target a code with a laser point prior to triggering the read function. Another great feature is an audible and visual signal that indicates a successful scan.

The new PowerScan handheld barcode reader is able to read all commonly used barcodes from a distance of up to 1,100 mm. The data is processed by an integrated decoder and transmitted to the host system. PowerScan can be connected to a host computer up to 150 meters away or operated in combination with TERMEX operator terminals or from Pepperl+Fuchs’ VisuNet or iPC-Ex control stations. The PowerScan is configured simply by scanning the system barcode.
