Machine downtimes are the most dreaded events during industrial operation. This also applies to areas where, for example, large surface materials are automatically processed, tested or packaged. One of the causes of production interruptions in such cases is often the unintentional drawing in of double materials or double sheets.

As processing tools are normally not designed for double material strengths, they are at an acute risk of damage or destruction.

The investigation by ultrasonic transmission is an efficient option for double material control and has been optimized for large material thicknesses by Pepperl+Fuchs. In principle, all large surface materials such as metal, plastic, glass, plexiglass, film, and even ceramics and wood, can be checked for double material.

Dirt and dust do not impair the functionality and the ultrasonic double material check can be used without problems in typical industrial environments.

Material color, glossy and reflecting surfaces pose no problems. A benefit of the system is its easy commissioning without teach-in.

The sensor’s integrated evaluation electronics differentiate between the three states “no sheet”, “one sheet”, and “several sheets” and make the results available at three independent outputs.
