    The Fieldbus Diagnostics Compendium

The benefits of fieldbus technology within process automations are widely recognized. Most users stated that they would install this technology in future plants once they had successfully overcome the commissioning of the bus and providing the quality of the communication path would not degrade during the years of operation. This means that the fieldbus has to become visible to the user, which is commonly not an expert, by means of fieldbus diagnostics. Its task is to commission a single loop. Fieldbus diagnostics provide the necessary transparency.

According to the statements given at the last main assembly of NAMUR, large plants, within the chemical industry, rely on the maintenance technician to look after 500 to 1000 instrument circuits. In the not too distant future, this may increase to 2000 loops and looking even further ahead, could eventually increase to 4000 loops. This would surely be impossible without introducing diagnostics. Plant Asset Management will be impractical without the diagnosis of the communication: "You cannot improve what you cannot see" (John Berra, President of Emerson).

Investments in fieldbus diagnostics are necessary, but it is at this point that discussions take place concerning the benefits and whether initial costs can be justified. Pepperl+Fuchs has bundled 32 pages of statements from fieldbus experts and experienced users, key decision makers involved with the installation of fieldbus technology and system commissioners. "Fieldbus Diagnostics – Fieldbus made visible" has been released as part of the series of Pepperl+Fuchs Fieldbus compendia, in which the visionary statements about FuRIOS and the applications of this concept have also been published.
