The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of Applications
Pepperl+Fuchs has been involved for decades with the subject of safety technology and, in fact, brought the first digital input and output channels onto the market. These devices were evaluated in accordance with the relevant requirement classifications (DIN V 19250/19251—the first comprehensive standards relating to safety in the process sector). They were suitable at that time for applications in both the process sector and in tasks relevant to the safety of machinery and were appropriately certificated. Of course, in addition they were available in intrinsically safe versions approved for use in hazardous areas.
The obvious follow up to these products was a continued intensive contribution to the evolution of safety technology, for example through collaboration on the relevant tasks involved in the development of the respective international standards. Such collaboration brings with it the great advantage for a company, that its own products can be adapted at a very early stage to the changed requirements.
The outcome is that today Pepperl+Fuchs has very considerable application experience with an extensive range of components, which have been evaluated in accordance with SIL.
Pepperl+Fuchs makes this wide range of diverse knowledge available in a variety of ways and in various media:
- Publications, such as data sheets, product assessments, the SIL Handbook, etc.
- Press articles in the most varied of notable technical magazines and journals.
- Via employees specially trained in this area of expertise.
- Seminars and training sessions, conducted by Pepperl+Fuchs itself and in collaboration with various institutions, such as the “Haus der Technik“ (House of Technology) and the TÜV.
- International conferences, such as the “Petroleum and Chemical Industry Conference“ and "HazardEx"
- Pepperl+Fuchs sessions, like our SIL Events, provide an easy introduction to the world of the Safety Integrity Level (SIL).
