Measuring without Measurements

Measure 4 liters of liquid with two buckets!
Measure 4 liters of liquid with two buckets!

With the help of two buckets and a water tap, a specific amount of water must be measured. One bucket holds 5 liters and the other bucket holds 3 liters. Both containers are lacking measurement indicators.

How can you measure a liquid amount of 4 liters using only these two buckets?

Solution

You can measure 4 liters of liquid using these two methods:

Method 1

  1. First, you fill up the 5 liter bucket and pour 3 liters out of it into the 3 liter bucket. You now have 2 liters in the 5 liter bucket.
  2. Empty the 3 liter bucket.
  3. Pour the 2 liters into the now empty 3 liter bucket.
  4. Next, fill up the 5 liter bucket and pour 1 liter out of it into the 3 liter bucket in order to fill up this container.
  5. Finally, the larger bucket now contains exactly 4 liters!

Method 2

  1. Fill up the 3 liter bucket and pour these 3 liters into the 5 liter container.
  2. Fill the 3 liter bucket again and pour 2 liters of it into the 5 liter bucket.
  3. Empty the 5 liter container and pour the 1 liter which remains in the 3 liter bucket into the 5 liter bucket.
  4. Fill up the 3 liter container and pour these 3 liters into the 5 liter container.
  5. Finally, the larger bucket now contains exactly 4 liters!
