Ultrasonic Sensors for the Extreme Cold—L2 Series Now in Low-Temperature Versions

2019-07-01

Low-Temperature Ultrasonic Sensor
The low-temperature L2 ultrasonic sensors feature a wide temperature range of -40 °C to +70 °C

When the temperature drops far below zero, using sensors can be risky. Even though standard ultrasonic sensors reliably operate in temperatures as low as -25 °C, specialty sensors for even lower temperatures are rare. Pepperl+Fuchs is now releasing a low-temperature version of its popular L2 ultrasonic sensor that is ready for use in cold storage and extremely cold regions of the world.

Reliable Object Detection in Temperatures as Low as -40 °C

The newest product from the market leader in ultrasonic sensors features an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +70 °C. Combining this low-temperature capability with the advantages of ultrasonic sensor technology, like lack of sensitivity to fog and snow, creates a robust and versatile sensor solution for even the coldest environments.

In addition to typical cold storage applications like object detection on conveyors and pallet detection on forklifts, the sensor can also be used on mobile equipment in outdoor applications. Applications include positioning processes on airport jetways, anti-collision applications on airport firefighting vehicles, and de-icing machines and support leg monitoring on mobile cranes.

Flexibility Meets Ruggedness

Low-temperature L2 sensors are mounted with a rugged metal bracket. Sensors can be connected by a heavy-duty 2 m fixed cable with a larger core cross-section instead of a standard M12 plug. This enhanced sensor connection also eliminates the time-consuming search for suitable cable sockets.

With a five-way rotatable sensor head and extensive configuration options like adjustable sound beam width, the low-temperature sensors can easily be adapted to the space available. This makes it useful for even more applications. Automatic synchronization allows up to ten sensors to be mounted and operated in immediate proximity. The low-temperature sensors are available with three detection ranges (500 mm, 2000 mm, 4000 mm) and a variety of outputs.

Highlights of L2 Low-Temperature Ultrasonic Sensors

  • Extended -40 °C to +70 °C temperature range—ideal for low-temperature applications
  • Heavy-duty metal bracket provides secure mounting
  • Flexible integration with a rotating sensor head and integrated connection cable
  • Sensor synchronization function for reliable operation of up to ten sensors in close proximity
  • Reliable interference suppression with adjustable sound beam via push buttons or software
  • Variety of sensing ranges available up to 4 m
