Key Technical Data/Specification

Magnetic field sensors have typical key technical data. This must be known to ensure proper use in plants and applications.

Term Description
Output activity Quality with which a sensor issues output signals (e.g., for "result" and "position") depending on the incoming input current. The signals can be high active or low active.
Rated
operating distance
(sn)
The rated operating distance is a normative variable for defining the operating distances.

This distance does not take into account manufacturing tolerances or changes caused by external influences such as voltage and temperature.

cf. EN 60947-5-2

Operating
voltage
(UB)

The operating voltage indicates the voltage range with which the equipment may be supplied.

The connections of the sensor for the supply voltage are labeled L+ and L-. L- is the ground connection and L+ is the live connection.

For NAMUR sensors, the rated voltage is specified.

Rated operating current (Ie)
Also: Operating current (IL). This value specifies the maximum load current during continuous operation; see EN 60947-5-2. The value is indicated for magnetic field sensors of different types: Hall effect sensor system and piston monitoring sensor.
Electrical load capacity The maximum electrical power with which a sensor can be supplied. This value is indicated for magnetic field sensors of different types: Reed switch, Hall effect sensor system, and piston monitoring sensor.
Assured operating distance (sa)

Distance from the sensing face, within which actuation of the sensor is assured under set conditions:

cf. EN 60947-5-2

Hysteresis (H)

Distance between the switch points when the damping element approaches the sensor and when it moves away.

Short-circuit
protection
Measure taken in electrical or electronic circuits that prevents damage to the sensor in the event of a short circuit. Many sensors feature cyclical short-circuit protection. When a current limit is exceeded, the output opens and closes periodically until the short circuit is rectified.
No‑load supply current
(I0)
The current received by a sensor with no load connected.
Mechanical service life Maximum number of mechanically possible switching cycles of a Reed switch until the switch has reached the end of its service life.
Rated voltage (U0) Also: nominal voltage. Root mean square of the voltage for which standard magnetic field sensors with a NAMUR output signal are designed.
Bounce time The time that a Reed switch needs to become active when it is switched on.
Repeatability The ability of a Hall effect sensor system or Reed switch to repeatedly deliver the same results, regardless of the operating personnel performing the test.
Switching range A type of "switching range" for the magnetic field sensor for piston position feedback. In this special application, this refers to the width of the sensing range in which the sensor can detects the passing or the presence of the piston.
Switching frequency (f)
Number of switching cycles of a sensor per second and under specified conditions.
Maximum number of changes in Hertz (Hz) from the dampened to the non-dampened state
Degree of protection
Extent of protection provided by a housing against access to dangerous parts, against penetration of solid foreign matter, and against water ingress, as proven by standardized test methods.
Classification of electrical equipment according to the following aspects: 1. Suitability for various ambient conditions 2. Protective measures against potential danger to people. Classification of electrical equipment according to the following aspects: referred to colloquially as "IP protection." IP stands for International Pro-tection.

cf. DIN EN 60529:2014-09 and VDE 0470-1:2014-0
Voltage drop
(Ud)
A potential difference that occurs when current passes through a resistor/load located between two terminals of a circuit or through an electrical component.
Ud is measured via the activated sensor or output. See EN 60947-5-1; VDE 0660-200:2018-0
Current consumption
Current required for intended operation.
Specification of the current required by standard magnetic field sensors with a NAMUR output signal, depending on whether the damping magnet is detected or not detected
Ambient
temperature
Temperature range within which a product, component, or device operates without interference according to the specification.
