5G-ACIA Task Force Gets to Work

In a world of connected plants and machines that communicate with each other, fast data connections are needed to make such scenarios possible in the first place. The coming 5G mobile communication generation is of critical importance, because present communications standards cannot fulfill the requirements of industrial applications.
To define the standards of this mobile communication generation and ensure suitability for automation, the “5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation” (5G-ACIA) task force was founded on April 3, 2018 at the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturer’s Association (ZVEI). Pepperl+Fuchs, a manufacturer of industrial automation technology, is also part of this initiative and is working together with 32 other members to prepare 5G for industrial use.
Compared to the previous mobile communication generation, 5G focuses more on “machine-type communication” and the Internet of things to realize wireless Industry 4.0 applications. “With 5G, not only the higher possible bandwidths are important, but also the reduced latency in the millisecond range, which is necessary for mobile applications with demanding real-time requirements,” says Benedikt Rauscher, Head of Global IOT Projects and Industry 4.0 at Pepperl+Fuchs.

Op weg naar Industrie 4.0 met 5G
De leden van 5G-ACIA werken actief mee aan het definiëren van de normen en regels voor 5G. Deel van hun werk zal eruit bestaan gebruikstoepassingen en de bijhorende industrievereisten te identificeren en analyseren. "5G zal het centrale zenuwstelstel van de fabriek van de toekomst worden en het zal een storende invloed hebben op de industriële productie”, stelt Dr. Andreas Müller (Bosch), voorzitter van 5G-ACIA. "5G-ACIA brengt voor het eerst alle belangrijke mondiale spelers samen. Dit stelt ons in staat doelgericht samen te werken om te garanderen dat de belangen van de industrie op correcte wijze worden behartigd.”
De taskforce bestaat uit vertegenwoordigers van de automatiserings- en productiesector, alsook toonaangevende organisaties op het gebied van informatie- en communicatietechnologie. Dat is waarom Dr. Gunther Kegel, CEO van Pepperl+Fuchs, enthousiast is over de 33-ledige groep: “Opgericht door ZVEI-leden, vergaart de 5G-taskforce gestaag bijkomende leden die eveneens hun steentje willen bijdragen om het onderwerp van 5G in industriële toepassingen te verbreiden. Ik heb nog nooit zo’n uitgebreide en indrukwekkende steun ervaren.” Dit niveau van inzet en interesse toont hoe belangrijk de komende mobiele 5G-communicatiegeneratie is voor de toekomst van industriële productie.
