Pepperl+Fuchs Helps Fulfill the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC

2016-11-18

New: SISTEMA library for AS-Interface products now available

Functional safety of plants and machinery
Rules for the functional safety of plants and machinery are outlined in IEC 61508 and EN ISO 13849.

Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC makes the assessment of safety instrumented systems and applications compulsory for plant and machine manufacturers. Hence, standard EN ISO 13849-1+2 is listed in the Machinery Directive.

Plant manufacturers are required to calculate the actual performance level (PL) of all safety functions or parts used in the plant, in order to fulfill the requirements of EN ISO 13849-1. Here, SISTEMA can help.

SISTEMA is a software tool that offsets the parameters of all components used in an application or system against each other. For this purpose, Pepperl+Fuchs provides various SISTEMA libraries for its standard products (NEW: SISTEMA library for AS-Interface products). Using these libraries facilitates the process of researching safety parameters, and eases the calculation of the performance level (PL).

Safety values for standard components

As a supplier, Pepperl+Fuchs makes it easy to access the relevant values of components already in use. This helps you calculate safety assessments.

Your benefits at a glance

  • Confirmation of the required Performance Level (PLr) via proven SISTEMA software tool
  • Easy integration of standardized values in the calculation of safety functions, making it easier to quantitatively prove the safe operation of the machine or plant.
  • Values are available in different formats
  • Implementation of similar applications can be realized in form of standardized safety functions, so existing data can be reused.

Values overview

  • MTTFd (Mean Time to Dangerous Failure)
  • TM (Mission Time)
  • DC (Diagnostic Coverage)
  • L10h (Nominal service life, for rotary encoders with regards to service life of ball bearings)

The values and calculation procedures have been developed by BGIA (Institute for Occupational Safety).

When the values are available for all components in use, the safety assessment of the machine or plant can follow. At Pepperl+Fuchs, you have easy access to values of the majority of standard sensors.

Where can I find the values?

Please refer to the product data sheets for the relevant values. Just enter the model number of the product in the search box on our website.

Additionally, you can download SISTEMA libraries containing the most important product values.
