Avoid Damages with Safe Positioning in Automated Storage and Retrieval System

The Application

Automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) are a common warehouse automation technology used in manufacturing, distribution centers, and the material handling market. These automated systems quickly store materials for on-demand retrieval.

The Goal

A manufacturing company wanted to incorporate an ASRS system into their warehouse. Because downtime from damages and failures can be expensive with ASRS technology, the manufacturer was looking for a system that featured precise and reliable positioning with convenient and quick assembly.

The Solution

Data Matrix code tape was installed on the shaft of the storage and retrieval component of the ASRS system and the 2-D safePXV read head was mounted alongside the moving carrier. The safePXV provides a reliable x-axis position to ensure that the carrier picks the right item or material from the right rack or shelf location. The safePXV camera allows for 25 mm of vertical tolerance, +/- 50 mm from the code tape, and up 75 mm gaps to be traversed with no loss of position.

The Benefits

In applications involving automated storage and retrieval systems, safety systems help ensure reliable linear positioning and adherence to applicable safety norms and standards. These systems provide information on the current position, speed, and acceleration and therefore serve to protect people and materials.

The safePXV absolute positioning system is quick to install and easy to maintain. With 0.2 mm of position resolution and a response time up to 10 m/s, the safePXV technology is fast and accurate enough to meet the requirements of the control system. No adjustments are required over time as with other technologies because the system has no moving parts. Additionally, the safePXV can position a stacker crane of an
ASRS system on an x-axis and y-axis.

At a Glance

  • When an ASRS system is deployed in a highbay warehouse, storage heights can require safe positioning.
  • The Data Matrix code tape, at 25 mm, is narrow enough to fit the shaft of the storage and retrieval component.
  • The safePXV absolute positioning system is quick to install and simple to maintain.

Data Matrix Positioning Systems

The PCV, PXV, and safePXV Data Matrix positioning systems from Pepperl+Fuchs use Data Matrix codes for precise positioning. They consist of a 2-D camera system, a read head, and Data Matrix code tape. This unique combination ensures the highest precision and incredibly reliable positioning.
