Whether in logistics centers, on factory premises, or in office buildings—AGVs must accurately detect their surroundings at all times to rule out collisions with people and objects.

This requires the use of special technologies. Pepperl+Fuchs offers reliable sensors and systems for this purpose, such as the USi-safety ultrasonic sensor system with safety approval according to ISO 13849-1 category 3 PL d or the R2300 3-D LiDAR sensor with the highest angular resolution in its class. Reliable Loading Detection during Transfer

When loading and unloading automated guided vehicles at transfer stations, the position of the load must be precisely detected. To ensure correct transfer, an R2300 3-D LiDAR sensor is mounted on the vehicle's mast. This provides measurement data as the AGV approaches and as the load is loaded, which is available to the control system as a 3-D point cloud.

Correct Alignment of Automated Bots When Picking up Material

When transporting trolleys or racks, automated bots move into a recess under the load carrier to lift it. A PGV read device mounted on the top of the vehicle identifies the load carrier with the aid of a Data Matrix tag. At the same time, the orientation of the read device to the tag determines the relative position of the vehicle. In this way, the PGV positioning system ensures precise alignment of the vehicle and safe transport of goods.

Exact Position and Speed Measurement for AGVs

To precisely determine their own position, AGVs need additional data besides that provided by optical sensors. For this task, two measuring systems are combined: a rotary encoder and a 2-D LiDAR sensor. ENI58IL, TVI40, or MNI series incremental rotary encoders are mounted on the wheels and provide relative motion data, which is offset against the absolute position data provided by the 2-D LiDAR sensor. This enables exact position determination.
