We care for Oz

Animal preservation, also our passion. We care ... for Oz.

South Africa is a beautiful country in the southern hemisphere that offers a world of treasures. The first thing that comes to mind when we think of Africa is wildlife. The big five, elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard are animals we visualize. Strong and dominant but unfortunately also fragile to men. The largest population of rhinos lives in South Africa. This beautiful animal that has wondered the earth for 50 million years is now endangered. Illegal poaching has reached its peak and has become an industry. Prior to 2006 rhino poaching was maintained, but since then skyrocketed. If the killing of rhinos continues at this rate, death will overtake birth within the next two to three years. We cannot be responsible for the extinction of one of the great treasures of Africa. It is time to step up!

CARE for WILD AFRICA (www.careforwild.co.za) represents the tremendous efforts of Petronel Nieuwoudt, a lady with more than 20 years of experience in the care and conservation of wildlife, who has now consolidated her efforts to develop a center in South Africa devoted to the care and rehabilitation of African wildlife. Care, hand rearing management and capture of infant, injured/orphaned animals are the passions that drive CARE for WILD AFRICA. Petronel is also one of a few who has specialized in the care of orphaned and injured rhinos.

For Pepperl+Fuchs it all started when Dr. Kegel, CEO of Pepperl+Fuchs Germany came to South Africa for the Pepperl+Fuchs Office inauguration in Johannesburg. During this visit, he became aware of the poaching problem in South Africa. Hearing about this, he left determined to get the company involved in the cause to save the rhinos. When Marc Van Pelt, Managing Director of Pepperl+Fuchs in South Africa, communicated the story of a baby rhino found in the Kruger National Park to Dr. Kegel, the company got the opportunity to assist. The baby rhino's mother was poached near Lower Sabie, he was about 4 months old. He was a very shy calf as he witnessed his mother being killed with a rifle. This story came to the attention of one of the private shareholders of Pepperl+Fuchs and the decision was made to adopt “Oz”, at the ‘CARE for WILD AFRICA’ Rhino Sanctuary.
