The owner of a small bar knows his customers very well. He says that ladies who come to his bar alone spend an average of $16, unaccompanied men spend $25 each, and couples leave $43 each. On Thanksgiving, he had 25 guests and took in a total of $567. Now, assuming that his averages were true in each case, what was the composition of his guests on Thanksgiving?
Solution
The guests present on Thanksgiving must have consisted of seven couples, ten single men, and one single lady. Therefore, there were 25 people all in all, and at the prices stated they would pay exactly $567 altogether.
