Advantages of Radar Sensors

Pepperl+Fuchs makes the special characteristics of the radar wave available in a sensor that meets all the requirements of industrial and challenging environments. From the design and electrical connection to signal transmission, parameterization, and functional reliability—all aspects have been considered to make maximum use of the advantages of FMCW technology.

Industrial radar sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs are able to detect a wide variety of objects with an RCS of 70 m² in a wide range of up to 25 meters and more, and at a sampling rate of up to 200 Hz. This means that applications requiring short response times can be realized effortlessly.
Due to the FMCW principle of measurement, cross-talk between the radar sensors is ruled out and several sensors can easily be installed in close proximity to each other. Manually initiated synchronization of the sensors is not necessary.
Radar waves are able to penetrate materials such as plastics. On the one hand, this allows obstructive interference targets in the detection range of the radar sensors to be masked. On the other hand, the sensors can be easily installed behind plastic covers or the levels of aggressive liquids in tanks with plastic walls can be detected from the outside without contact.
Even in rain, fog, wind, or dust, industrial radar sensors deliver reliable measurement results. In addition to the low-interference operating principle, this is ensured by a robustness housing with a degree of protection of IP68/69 and a PTFE radome.
Depending on the type of application, suitable connection types are available. Sensor variants with vehicle-specific connectors such as DEUTSCH or AMP Superseal are suitable for use on mobile machines. Alternatively, they can be supplied with an M12 connection or a fixed cable with open ends.
The radar sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs use a CiA-301-compliant integrated CANopen interface to transmit measured values and parameterization commands. This means that the sensors can be easily integrated into CAN bus infrastructures (e.g. on mobile machines) without the need for new individual wiring.
The radar sensors can be conveniently parameterized using the PACTware configuration tool. A communication DTM (COM DTM) for configuring CANopen communication and a radar sensor DTM are available here. Various objects measured in the detection range can be visualized using a reflection analysis integrated in PACTware.
Diagnostics are possible via the CANopen interface so that the radar sensors can also be used in safety-relevant applications in conjunction with a fail-safe PLC, whereby a safety level of PL c Cat. 2 is achieved with just one sensor. By using two sensors redundantly, a safety level of PL d Cat. 3 can be achieved.
The proven VariKont L2 design ensures a compact form factor and allows the radome to be ideally aligned due to a rotatable and tiltable sensor head. A robust metal bracket serves as a mount for the sensor head and prevents problems caused by harsh environments and vibrations. Status LEDs integrated into the housing can be switched off if required.
The radar sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs are characterized by their high electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and achieve E1-comparable values in nearly every category. In conjunction with the CANopen interface and the typical vehicle connectors, they are therefore ideally suited for integration into mobile machines.
